Coyote Facts (Canis latrans)
The coyote (Canis latrans) is a medium-sized canid that is closely related to the dog and the wolf. The animal is well-known for its yips, howls, and other vocalizations. In fact, the scientific name for the coyote means barking dog. The common name comes from the Nahatl word coyÃ
tl. Fast Facts: Coyote Scientific Name: Canis latransCommon Names: Coyote, prairie wolfBasic Animal Group: MammalSize: 32 to 37 inches plus 16 inch tailWeight: 20 to 50 poundsLifespan: 10 yearsDiet: OmnivoreHabitat: North and Central AmericaPopulation: MillionsConservation Status: Least Concern Description Coyotes are larger than foxes and slightly smaller than wolves. The average adult ranges from 32 to 36 inches in length (head and body) with a 16 inch tail and weight between 20 and 50 pounds. Size varies depending on habitat, but females tend to be shorter in height and length than males. Coyote fur color ranges from reddish to grayish brown, depending on the animals habitat. Melanistic (black) forms occur, but white or albino coyotes are extremely rare. The animal has white neck and belly fur and a black-tipped tail. The face features a long muzzle and pointed ears, and the tail is brush-shaped like that of a fox. While coyotes and wolves are of comparable size and coloration, coyote ears are more sharply upright, their face and frame are leaner, and they run with their tail held low. In contrast, a wolf runs with its tail held horizontally. Habitat and Distribution The coyotes range originally spanned from the plains and deserts of western North America through Mexico and into Central America. The extirpation of wolves in North America allowed expansion across the United States and much of Canada. Currently, coyotes are found from Panama in the south up to Alaska in the north. While suited to prairies and deserts, the species has adapted to nearly every habitat, including urban environments. Diet and Behavior Coyotes, like other canines, are omnivorous. They hunt rabbits, snakes, frogs (not toads), deer and other ungulates, and turkeys and other large birds. While they prefer their natural prey, they will take chickens, lambs, calves, and pets. In addition, coyotes eat carrion, insects, grass, and fruit. With their excellent senses of hearing and smell, coyotes can detect prey at a distance. Then, they track prey by sight. For smaller prey, coyotes are solitary hunters. However, they will form packs to cooperatively hunt deer, elk, sheep, and pronghorns. Coyotes are not as social as wolves, but they will act cooperatively to hunt and raise offspring. Perry McKenna Photography / Getty Images Reproduction and Offspring Coyotes are monogamous. Mating occurs between February and April. The pair seeks or builds a den for birthing and rearing pups. Two months after mating, the female gives birth to between three and twelve pups. Pups weigh between 0.44 and 1.10 pounds at birth and are born blind and toothless. The male hunts for food and brings it back to the female while she nurses. The pups are weaned by two months of age and fight with each other to establish dominance. By June or July, the family leaves the den to hunt and patrol its territory. Territory is marked with urine and scratches in the ground. Pups gain the size of their parents by eight months and their full weight at nine months. Some leave their parents in August, but others may remain with the family much longer. Females that do not mate the following year may help their mother or sisters raise young. In the wild, coyotes may live 10 years. While they may be preyed upon by mountain lions, wolves, or bears, most die from hunting, disease, or automobile collisions. In captivity, a coyote may live 20 years. Coyote pups resemble fox or wolf pups. Matt Stirn / Aurora Photos / Getty Images Hybrids Coyotes and wolves sometimes mate, producing coywolf hybrids. In fact, most wolves in North America carry coyote DNA. Although uncommon, coyotes and dogs sometimes mate and produce coydogs. Coydogs vary in appearance, but tend to retain the shyness of coyotes. Conservation Status The IUCN categorizes the conservation status of the coyote as least concern. The species is abundant throughout its range, with stable or increasing populations. Humans pose the primary threat to coyotes. Ironically, control efforts may have led to the species expansion, as persecution alters coyote behavior and increases litter sizes. Coyotes and Humans Coyotes are hunted for fur and to protect livestock. Historically, they were eaten by trappers and indigenous people. Coyotes have adapted to human encroachment to the point where there are populations of urban coyotes. Coyote pups are readily domesticated, but they tend not to make ideal pets because of their scent and shyness around strangers. Sources Cartaino, Carol. Analysis Of The Book Alice s Adventures - 824 Words
In todayââ¬â¢s world most are familiar with the story of Alice in Wonderland. Admittedly, most are more familiar with the Disney movie, than the actual book. The movie and book are captivating in their imagination, and bare some striking similarities. The movie and the book have many differences. The movie has a different medium and can convey differently than the book. In 1951, Disney, a company well-known for animating favorite fairy tales, animated the well-loved story of Alice who fell down the rabbit hole and into a new world as she slept. The world she fell into however was a bit different than in the book Aliceââ¬â¢s Adventures in Wonderland. The movie could show more than the story could describe, and the movie covered more than just what was in that one book in order to create a fuller world then what was provided in teh one book, the producers decided to include elements from Alice through the Looking Glass as well. Lewis Carroll was not only a writer, but a mathema tician as well. When he wrote the stories about Alice, Carroll wanted to make sure proportions remained intact and he wanted to focus more on Aliceââ¬â¢s story than the world creation. Though we get vivid details about the rabbit-hole world, it takes more space to describe this in written form than in picture form. While at the same time it can sometimes take longer for dialogue to play out on screen than on the page depending on cadence and speaking rate in the film. Automobile Industry in Korea Rising or Falling Free Essays
Introduction Koreaââ¬â¢s Automobile Industry is the fifth largest in the manufacture of cars and its parts merely imported from Japan and U.S.à Today, Korea is also one of the most highly developed in production of automobiles. We will write a custom essay sample on Automobile Industry in Korea: Rising or Falling? or any similar topic only for you Order Now By 1980s, the ability of Korea in auto industry has increased more than what they have expected. Producing 1.1 million units was really a great achievement, preferably in South Korea. Since economic boosted Korea for the past years, this made them partly one of the influential countries here in Asia. Its government supported the growth of this industry and other programs created to build a strong and developed industrial base, which created opportunities particularly in business and other industries in the country.à Not only in automobile industry that Korea has expertise, but also in the field of electronics, particularly cell phone manufacturing, etc. Discussion Over the past decade, Korea has proved its ability in the production, manufacturing and exporting of automobile way back in 1980. The industryââ¬â¢s growth has expanded five times of what the Koreanââ¬â¢s expected. The question is, why or why not make the investment in the Korean automobile industry?à Korea, presently divided into North Korea and South Korea. A small country, yet one of the most civilized one. Because of their advanced technology as of Singapore and Japan, this made them one of the most progressive countries here in Asia. Automobile industry in Korea has been stable in the past years as founded in charts. However, competition is also stable. When the three big companies namely Hyundai Motor Co., Kia Motors, and GM Daewoo of auto industry in Korea were launched, a growing number of competitors immediately followed. Koreaââ¬â¢s growing industry changed the lifestyle of the Koreans,à workers regret a jobless revival, everyone protest of increasing land and housing prices but their wages became similar to western countries, labour unions were also banned. South Koreaââ¬â¢s investment in China in 2004, mainly steel and cars, passed Japanââ¬â¢s investment. Koreanââ¬â¢s believed that they have an advantage in China because they do not suffer from post war hostilities than of companies in Japan. With the growing number of jobs, Korea experienced increased number of labourers and employment suppleness. They even hired workers from other countries just to increase the number of employees that they need in a particular company. Korea is now facing an economic stability and government financial situation. They continue to improve their work, and this means a continued financial problems. Korea has its access to potential and capital markets for their products are renowned globally. Their importers were also acclaimed to be among of the leading countries in Asia and in the world like U.S and Japan, which are also their primary manufacturers.à Despite these problems, Korea still emerged as one of the leading countries in Asia in terms of investments and exports. For the next two years, the automobile industry planned to increase their sales from 28% to 50%. Conclusion Korea proved that it is worth to make an investment with them in automobile industry, for they are financially stable; they had stable workers and are supported by their government policies. Business opportunities also increased due to their implementation of the ââ¬Å"Import Diversification Programâ⬠, which pushed Korean firms to transfer purchases from Japan to purchases from U.S. this gave Korea a great opportunity in the business world, especially in automobile industry. One of the dangers of investing in Koreaââ¬â¢s auto industry is its competition to other neighboring countries that also manufactures automobile like China, which they say that they would enter the world market. It is also said that China produced over a million automobiles in 2004, which was really a great start.à Another danger is the constantly changing of the country is laboring policies. Korean government controlled the formation of labour unions, which is why their policies are always changing. Because Koreaââ¬â¢s economy grew rapidly, costs of necessities increased rapidly. They need more persons to work in their companies, because jobs increased as their economy grew larger and wider. Sure, they have access in other countries like U.S and Philippines; their only problem is the number of workers that would try their luck in working in the country. Though Korea claims that their automobile industry aims a great success, we believed that it is not that worthy to invest there because of Chinaââ¬â¢s entering in the world market, the restrictions of labour unions and the attempts of the labourers to conduct company strikes. Maybe, investors will increase if they still improve the status of their growing business. It is not that bad to invest in the auto industry of Korea, only if China would not be a great competitor. By 2020, industry tycoons do agree that China could produce a mass of 20 million cars yearly. This proves that China could really make it ahead of Korea in the auto industry. China is also one of the most exporters of cars and cell phone units, which range from 27-30% than of Korea that only gained 26-28% in the past years. If Korea could only improve their way of treating exporters, they would probably get as much customers like of China. Koreaââ¬â¢s only edge in China is that their currency, the won, improved a lot better for it threatened the cost of U.S dollars as seen in charts and in newspapers. Weââ¬â¢re not saying that investing in Korea now is bad, only that the competition is not that healthy than of their previous years. Forests Essay Research Paper REFORESTATION free essay sample
Forests Essay, Research Paper REFORESTATION The intent of this written study is to inform the reader about the concerns and facts involved withreforestation. Reforestation began in Ontario after World War II. What happened was, professional foresterswere assigned to an country and became responsible for its well being. Under the Crown Timber Act, long termmanagement was prepared. Then the many stairss needed to reconstruct a wood began. Included in this study will be information on the effects of cutting and replanting, such as Carbon Dioxide, and Global Warming. Following this will be methods for be aftering a wood, and how they are conveyed beforeplanting in a wood begins. There are many grounds why woods are cut down. One is to profit economically, with furniture and homebuilding. But there is besides another ground. Arguments say # 8220 ; the United States could assist decelerate the atmosphericaccumulation of C dioxide by replacing old-growth woods with faster-growing immature trees # 8221 ; . We will write a custom essay sample on Forests Essay Research Paper REFORESTATION or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page A new studyof immature and old woods says how this is in fact non true. Lumbermans have said that new trees pull the carbondioxide better than old trees, and this may look true, but it is non. There is one point being overlooked fromall of this. The older, larger trees can hive away much, much more C dioxide than a new tree could. By cuttingand firing these brilliant seasoned trees, the CO2 is being released back into the ambiance. These releasesof C dioxide add up in our milieus, merely to escalate Global Warming. Although this shows what happenswhen one Burnss and cuts down old woods, one must still works new trees for long term programs, non allowing themgrow for a few old ages, to so cut them down. There are many methods for be aftering a wood. The simplest method of replanting a wood is to go forth it tonature. A suited seed bed in which trees will readily take root is built-in for successful regeneration. Reducing competition by extinguishing grass, weed or bush is another dem and in procuring a new harvest of trees. These will shoot to bring forth seedlings. Though the weeds were eliminated earlier, they still grow back, andbecause of this hapless, quality trees will turn. Another method though, is to make a planned wood, where newconifers are grown from seed in a particular babys room. Seeding is a re-afforestation technique used chiefly in the Boreal forest country where fire or logging tends to go forth no or really small seeds for growing. In specific instances, Ministrystaff seed the country with treated tree seeds. Following this is the planting. In many instances, planting is theonly agencies of originating a new wood. Up to 80 000 000 trees are planted yearly in Ontario on Crown andprivate land. Normally immature woods have to be tended to. Once situated, a new harvest needs intermittent carefor the following 60 to 100 old ages. This means go oning protection from fires, disease and insects and routinethinning to concentrate the growing on selected harvest trees. Before a wood can be grown, certain processs must foremost happen. Collecting and processing seeds is one ofthem. Tree flowers fertilized by blowing air currents or insects generate seed, in a clip of someplace within 1 to 2years. Seed roll uping from the forests must be timed with sporadically happening good seed old ages. Angus, nearBarrie, is where all forest tr ee seed aggregation is coordinated. Stock of seeds can value up to $ 500 000.Usually this is about 3 billion seeds from 59 tree categories. In sum-up of the aforesaid, trees are really valuable to the human race economically and for wellness. Without treesthe environment could decline to the point where we would be populating on one big sweet. We must retrieve thatforest do non turn every bit easy as they used to because of fires and other catastrophes. This is why many woods areplanned, and cared for. Most of us will neer now how they turn out because for a wood to wholly turn, it needs within anyplace from 60 to 100 old ages or more. There are many grounds why we should hold re-afforestation. One being largely that we need forest to populate! Withoutforests, or any type of works, the C rhythm can # 8217 ; t consequence. There are non many statements against re-afforestation, but there can be some resistance for the land being used between a big concern company and the Ministry. I feel replanting of woods is really important to the human race. The Earth depends on many rhythms, where oneorganism depends on the other because of what it does. We, exhale C dioxide which the trees take in, whilethey give off critical oxygen. In shutting, we live in an age of engineering, go forthing behind us the past. With the yesteryear we are burying woods ; we must do certain this doesn # 8217 ; t go on.
